The exhibition project represents the most tragic and mysterious event in the whole Gospel story – the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The state of loneliness and abandonment of Our Savior is revealed by works of sacred art from the collection of the art museum: wooden carved sculptured of the XVII-XX centuries, altar crosses and icons.
The exposition opens with a rare sculpture for Belarus, which shows Christ in prison. According to the people’s interpretation, Jesus spends here one of the most difficult nights – the night before the crucifixion. The crosses of different denominations provide a conditional excursion into the iconography of the crucifixion.
The exposition is completed with the culmination part of the project – curatorial installation that symbolizes Calvary. Most of the wooden sculptures shown in the exhibition have a lot of losses and are demonstrated in a glossless form, which is the conceptual basis of the main curatorial idea of the project – the embodiment of the theme abandonment by God. Damaged by time and living conditions the matter of cult monuments intensifies the transmission of pain and suffering of Christ. Peculiarity of the exposition solution of the exhibition is the innovative approach to the representation of works of sacred art: minimalist installation design, audio accompaniment and lighting design.
The excursion was provided for kids by the curator of the exhibition Dmitri Salodki – the senior researcher at the department of Belarusian Art XX-XXI centuries.
